Bobo: Profile of a Working Dog

For this project, I decided to create a booklet with my dog, Bobo as the subject. I've categorized a few of his many occupations and used him and his relevant surroundings as materials for creating the letters. Bobo is a good dog that will (generally) do what he's told—at least with the right motivation. Unfortunately, having his picture taken is a dreadful chore for him and he didn't find get excited until I was done photographing him and moved onto the objects (ex: his leash). It was very, very labor-intensive, but lots of fun too. I've added a video of my process if you're interested!

Project: For this assignment, I chose to design a giftcard for a fictional children’s furniture company, Treasure Trove. What makes this company unique from other children’s furniture stores is that

Treasure Trove specializes in hidden treasures. Each item in-store is crafted by hand, and has something special hidden within it; it might be some kind of unexpected surprise, it might have a built-in lock in which the child can secure their own treasures, or even a secret compartment.

Concept: In order to creatively create and package my giftcard, I decided to create a package that embodies Treasure Trove’s specialty. To execute this, I hand-crafted a miniature set of wooden

drawers that contains a surprise inside. The top 3 drawers show transparencies, each with a word printed on the left side (Discover, Secret, Treasure). These words can stand on their own as a command, or together, it can act as a sentence. On the right side, there is an abstract design. When all 3 drawers are open at the same time, a secret message is revealed: Treasure Trove. Finally, on the bottom drawer is the actual giftcard, presented as a mound of gleaming treasure.

Tidbit: I do not recommend using a glue gun for projects that you want for an extended period of time. For some reason, after I finished spraying on laqueur, in the middle of the photography session, everything started to come apart. It was like that first or second episode of Gilligan's Island where they use tree sap to glue back together the S.S. Minnow, only to have it fall apart before setting sail.

D is for Dog

I had to redesign a really bad book cover, and this is what I came up with. The only limitation is that the title had to be hand-done, so I photographed my dog's leash.

BMO

My BMO Bank ad. I had a lot of fun coming up with catch phrases for this one.

Tidbit: I have learned that the world of photography is a very fake, highly cosmetic world. That being said, my teacher expected perfection, and so I felt compelled to polish all my less-than-perfect coins.

Ardene

This one was a bit challenging. I remember going to my friend's place (who had a soft box) so that we could help each other with our photography assignments but I hadn't found a branch yet. I was steeling myself for the possibility that I might have to cut a branch off some random tree when I spotted the perfect one lying by the road!

Cashmere EnviroCare

An ad I did for my photography class. I chose to choose an environmentally friendly product, and thought up of the catch phrase Give back to nature when nature calls.

Tidbit: My mom taught me how to make the rose when I was very young, and she was taught by her aunt when she was young. We used to make them with ribbons, but it was definitely an interesting experience to try and make them with toilet paper!

This was the first of many spreads I designed for Typography class. Thankfully I was able to use a photograph I'd previously taken from my photography class.
